Predecessors XVI: Botvinnik-Petrosian 1963

Last week we looked at Ray's Times column for 7 June 2013, which plagiarised the annnotations from My Great Predecessors on the fifteenth game of the 1963 world championship match. This week we hop back one day and one game, to Ray's column for 6 June, which plagiarised the annnotations from My Great Predecessors to the fourteenth game of the same match.

Here's the column:

Last week it was the third volume of My Great Predecessors that was plagiarised. This week it's the second (Everyman, 2003)

in which volume the game was annotated on pages 222 to 224.

If it wasn't Ray's last plagiarism of the week, nor was it his first. Come to that, it wasn't even the first time he'd plagiarised these notes, since he'd already done so in his Times column for 20 August 2011.

Here's the 2011 column.

In the now-familiar way:

1. Black's move six.

Times 2013:

My Great Predecessors:

The move was not annotated in the 2011 column, but the 2013 column was a word-for-word plagiarism.

2. White's move seven.

Times 2011:

Times 2013:

My Great Predecessors:

Not much happening here - mind you, there's not a lot to steal from - but as usual with Ray, there's a better example just around the corner.

3. Black's move seven.

Times 2011:

Times 2013:

My Great Predecessors:

There you go: two Times notes only distinguishable from one another due to the presence of a typo in the later one, and both plagiarised word-for-word.

4. White's move eight.

Times 2011:

My Great Predecessors:

No note for 2013. The origins of the 2011 note are clear.

5. White's move eleven.

Times 2011:

My Great Predecessors:

"On" is indeed correct where "at" is not, but the greater error here is Ray's, don't you think?

6. White's move twelve.

Times 2011:

Times 2013:

My Great Predecessors:

This time we have notes from both Times columns, both of them...(etc).

7. Black's move fifteen.

Times 2011:

Times 2013:

My Great Predecessors:

I do rather think that's Botvinnik being plagiarised here. Not for the first time.

8. White's move sixteen.

Times 2011:

My Great Predecessors:

No note for 2013.

9. White's move thirty.

Times 2011:

Times 2013:

My Great Predecessors:

Botvinnik, again.

10. White's move thirty-three.

Times 2011:

Ray produces a note of his very own, albeit only in the 2011 column. As if doing penance for his multiple plagiarisms. Not quite enough, Ray. Not quite enough.

11. Black's move thirty-four.

Times 2013:

My Great Predecessors:

More plagiarism...

12. Black's move thirty-seven.

Times 2013:

My Great Predecessors:

...and more.

13. White's move forty-four.

Times 2011:

Times 2013:

My Great Predecessors:

The logical completion of his own plan: Ray finishes with a note, in 2013, entirely plagiarised.

That makes six consecutive Times columns in June 2013 which were plagiarised. Has any other journalist in history produced so many consecutive plagiarised columns?

But there was more to come.
